From the beginning, we’ve wanted Industrial Metal Supply Co. to stand apart - different in how we treat our customers, how we work together, and the results we achieve. These differences are best captured in the 31 "Fundamentals" that form the foundation of our unique culture. We call it The IMS Way.
1. THINK SAFE. WORK SAFE
Know and practice the safety procedures for your job. Watch out for the safety of your teammates as well, because we’re all part of the IMS family. Never take shortcuts that compromise your safety or that of your customers or teammates.
2. DO WHAT'S BEST FOR THE CUSTOMER
In all situations, act in the best interests of our customers, even if it’s a little harder or costs a little extra. Put their needs ahead of ours, because there’s no greater way to build a reputation than to do what’s right for others.
3. THINK TEAM FIRST
It’s about us, not any single person. Don’t let your ego or personal agenda get in the way of doing what’s best for the team. Be there for each other and be willing to step into another role or help a co-worker when that’s what’s required for success. Help each other succeed and remember that your teammates are relying on you to deliver results so that they can do the same.
4. TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR WORK
Have a passion for excellence and take pride in the quality of everything you touch and everything you do. Don’t accept or deliver mediocrity. Good is not good enough. Always ask yourself, "Is this my best work?"
5. BE OBSESSIVE ABOUT ORGANIZATION
Be organized and plan your work for maximum efficiency. Have all the tools and information necessary before starting your work. Have a game plan for accomplishing the day’s objectives. Know the priorities and work on them first.
6. PAY ATTENTION TO THE DETAILS
Missing just one detail can have an enormous impact on a job. Be a fanatic about accuracy and precision. The goal is to get things right, not simply to get them done. Double-check your work. Get the details right the first time.
7. GO THE EXTRA MILE
Be willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish the job . . . plus a little bit more. The extra mile separates the ordinary from the extraordinary. Be extraordinary!
8. PRACTICE BLAMELESS PROBLEM-SOLVING
Bring solutions rather than pointing fingers or dwelling on problems. Identify lessons learned and use those lessons to improve ourselves and our processes.
9. ACT WITH INTEGRITY
Demonstrate an unwavering commitment to doing the right thing in every action and every decision you make, especially when no one’s looking. Be truthful, no matter the consequences.
10. LISTEN GENEROUSLY
Listening is more than simply "not speaking." Give others your undivided attention. Be present and engaged.
11. SPEAK COURAGEOUSLY
Speak honestly in a way that helps to make progress. Be willing to ask questions, share ideas, or raise issues that may cause conflict when it’s necessary for team success.
12. LOOK AHEAD AND ANTICIPATE
Solve problems before they happen by anticipating future issues, planning for contingencies, and addressing them in advance.
13. FIND A WAY TO SAY YES
Take responsibility for making things happen. Respond to every situation by looking for how we can do it, rather than explaining why it can’t be done.
14. DEVELOP RELATIONSHIPS
Get to know your customers, suppliers, and co-workers on a more personal level. Strong relationships enable us to work through difficult issues and challenging times more successfully.
15. HONOR COMMITMENTS
Do what you say you’re going to do when you say you’re going to do it. This includes coming to work and being on time for all phone calls, appointments, and promises.
16. SHOW MEANINGFUL APPRECIATION
Recognizing people doing things right is more helpful than pointing out when they do things wrong. Regularly extend meaningful acknowledgment and appreciation.
17. SHARE INFORMATION
With appropriate respect for confidentiality, share information freely throughout our organization. The more people know, the better we can collaborate.
18. EMBRACE DIVERSE PERSPECTIVES
Be open to learning from others, no matter what role they have, and regardless of their age, background, experience, or tenure with our company.
19. RECOVER HEROICALLY
Problems and mistakes don’t define us – how we handle them does. Our best chance to "wow" is when a teammate or customer is upset and frustrated. Seize the moment and attack the problem.
20. BRING YOUR PASSION
Have a passion for what we do and be fully engaged. Make the most of each day by approaching every task with energy, focus, purpose, and enthusiasm.
21. BE RELENTLESS ABOUT IMPROVEMENT
Regularly evaluate the way you work to find ways to improve. Don’t be satisfied with the way things are today. "Because we’ve always done it that way" is not a reason.
22. WALK IN YOUR CUSTOMERS’ SHOES
Understand your customers’ needs, challenges, and frustrations. The better you understand them, the more effectively you can anticipate and meet their needs.
23. BE POSITIVE
You have the power to choose your attitude. Choose to be upbeat, optimistic, and enthusiastic. Your attitude is contagious. Spread optimism and positive energy.
24. BE A MENTOR
The best way to influence others is through your own example. Walk the talk. Take responsibility, formally and informally, to coach, guide, teach, and mentor others.
25. BE AN IMS AMBASSADOR
Consider how your actions affect our collective reputation and be a proud ambassador for IMS.
26. GET CLEAR ON EXPECTATIONS
Create clarity and avoid misunderstandings by discussing expectations upfront. End all meetings with clarity about action items, responsibilities, and due dates.
27. BE A FANATIC ABOUT RESPONSE TIME
Respond to questions and concerns quickly. Acknowledge that you received the question and keep those involved continuously updated on the status of outstanding issues.
28. TAKE PRIDE IN OUR APPEARANCE
The appearance of our stores, warehouses, and yards makes a statement about the quality of our work. Ensure that everything is clean, neat, and professional.
29. WORK ON YOURSELF
Be a lifelong learner. Seek out every opportunity to gain more knowledge, increase your skills, and become a greater expert.
30. EMBRACE CHANGE AND GROWTH
Get outside your comfort zone, rather than hanging on to old ways of doing things. Be excited by the possibilities that change and growth bring.
31. KEEP THINGS FUN
While our passion for excellence is real, remember that the world has bigger problems than the daily challenges that make up our work. Laugh every day.
