Does Steel Rust?

Time to Read: 0 m 0s

Rust is a reddish-brown iron oxide that forms when iron reacts with oxygen and water. Standard steel contains significant amounts of iron, a ferrous metal, so it is prone to corrosion and rust. Steel rusts when the iron in the metal reacts with oxygen in the air or moisture, forming iron oxide, also known as rust. This process is called oxidation.

Influencing Factors on Rust Formation

Several factors will determine if an environment influences the development of rust within an application. Some of the most significant factors that determine if rust will develop include:
  • Higher carbon content
  • Metal coatings & treatments
  • Environment

Does Carbon Steel Rust?

Due to its iron-rich content, carbon steel will rust when exposed to oxygen, moisture, and other corrosive elements. For applications that regularly encounter corrosive environments, stainless steel or another corrosion-resistant alloy or material is advised.

Does Mild Steel Rust?

Since mild steel is not manufactured with a chromium-oxide protective layer like stainless steel, it does not protect against rust or corrosion when exposed to moisture or highly oxygenated environments. Mild steel requires further processing, such as galvanizing, to gain corrosion resistance.

Does Galvanized Steel Rust?

Galvanized steel is coated with a layer of zinc, which protects the underlying steel from rusting by acting as a sacrificial barrier. However, over time, the zinc coating can wear away under certain conditions, exposing the steel and leading to rust, but it is significantly more resistant to corrosion than untreated steel.

How to Prevent Rust

To avoid the formation of rust-causing iron oxide, it’s crucial to ensure proper care and maintenance for vehicles, tools, and machinery made from iron-containing ferrous metals. Below are some practical methods for preventing rust:
  • Regular maintenance
  • Reduce and repair scratches
  • Apply protective coatings
  • Wipe down wet metals prior to storage
  • Utilize stainless steel, galvanized, treated, or non-ferrous metals
